Vati Mangalsutra
A Vati Mangalsutra (also written as Wati) is the traditional Maharashtrian sacred necklace worn by married women, characterized by its distinct cup-shaped gold pendants threaded on a chain of black and gold beads.
Key Features & Symbolism
-
The Vati (Cups): The defining feature consists of two hollow, bowl-shaped gold cups (vati or wati). Symbolically, these two cups represent the union of the bride and groom, as well as the coming together of two families. Traditionally, one cup represents the natal home (mayka) and the other represents the marital home (sasural).
-
Black Beads (Mani): The string (mani) is made of black glass beads mixed with gold. In Hindu tradition, black beads are believed to ward off negative energy (* नजर/evil eye*) and protect the longevity and health of the spouse.
-
Shiva and Shakti: Culturally, the gold elements represent Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti, symbolizing divine energy, balance, and harmony within the marital bond.
